All About Water Filters

Water, as we all well know, is absolutely necessary for all living things. Over the centuries with the growing human industry water has become more and more contaminated. And thus the need for water purification has risen. Early purification methods include boiling the water, putting metal instruments in the water before drinking or filtering it through crude sand. Today, with all the technological advancement, there is a whole range of water filters available to suit different needs.

Charcoal Water Filters – Water filter charcoal medium carbon is derived from coconut husk which absorbs the impurities as water passes through. This type of filter has a very high domestic usage. They are easy to install, quite affordable and filter out the most deadly contaminants like Cryptosporidium and Guardia.

Ceramic Water Filters – These filters come in a cartridge form that fits a normal bench top filter. A fossil substance - Diatomaceous Earth – is present at the core of the filter.

Water Distillers – Distillation rids water of all impurities. But recent research shows that distilled water affects the balance of minerals in the body and creates an acidic effect.

Ultra Violet Radiation Systems – Water is irradiated through a glass element using high frequency light and this kills all the living organisms in the water. These UV systems are very commonly used in Third world hotels. It is a very good sterilizing system but the only drawback is that one cannot tell if the system is working without a laboratory analysis of the water output. To overcome this more sophisticated systems incorporate an hour counter so a new element can be replaced at a safe interval.

Reverse Osmosis Filters – This water filter system was initially developed to process water in submarines. It draws water through an extremely fine membrane. This membrane works like a fine filter. The contaminated water is placed on one side of the filter and pressure is applied to stop, and then reverse the osmotic process. It is a slow water purification process but it works. However, it has the same limitations of distilled water – making the water completely mineral free which is not recommended for prolonged consumption.

Atmospheric Water Generators – These generators intake air and process the moisture from it to create water. The water is collected on a chilled spinning disk due to condensation. Fresh, clean drinking water is created by UV light, ozone and various filtration methods like reverse osmosis.
